There will be spoilers here- for those who haven't seen it, I definitely recommend watching it first, before reading this review.
Honestly, that wasn't what I was expecting- the actual Crossover is less than a minute long, and it ends with a TO BE CONTINUED! But it is so worth it!
The whole production is very well done- basically a continuation of the Lost in Space Forever documentary, and I hope there will be more, because if this is really the last time Bill Mumy plays Will Robinson, it leaves too many questions open… I mean, seriously, that was the biggest cliffhanger in LIS history, for both series's! It can't be the last one… it just can't be! Despite not wanting it to end, (and wanting more than a minute of actual crossover) I'm also very happy and grateful that we got this at all…
The majority of the featurette has Bill Mumy and Max Jenkins out of character, and their interactions are very sweet, even if I don't see why they couldn't have been in character for a bit more of it, especially for when they are comparing the similarities and differences between their LIS's.
Rather than being a final episode of LIS, as I had originally assumed it to be, this is more like an introduction to the show, both for the old and new fans- footage from the Classic series and the New series is shown side by side, which is very cool, although I feel like they could have treated the original a little better- it seemed to mainly focus on how special effects and monsters have improved, rather than how the characters changed- I personally felt like there wasn't a lot of new information in here for us Classic Series fans, but seeing Bill Mumy talk to the new Will is just so adorable to watch- and I hope it gets some of the new fans interested in watching the Classic Series!
While I could probably watch Bill and Max talk about Lost in Space for hours without getting bored, I was a little underwhelmed at first- WHERE WAS THE CROSSOVER WE WERE PROMISED? Then I noticed the familiar alien amulet/alien dimensional scanner/probable reality disrupter on the table, just like in Lost in Space Forever…
I knew that this would be similar to that 1998 special, and that Bill Mumy would be wearing the same costume, but I didn't expect it to literally reference the prior reunion in this way- before I fully comprehended what was happening, there was that familiar disappearing pop, and we were back on the Jupiter 2!
THE ORIGINAL JUPITER 2! I didn't expect to get so emotional, seeing it again… honestly, I didn't expect to see it again at all, even in reused footage from "Wild Adventure" of the Auxiliary Control area on the Lower Deck… but there was the original Robot… and… the new Will? And then original Will is on the New Jupiter 2 with the new Robot!
I love how our Will Robinson is upset that Max/new Will pressed the button on the device that transported them there, while new Will is standing with the Robot in exactly the same spot that original Will was when he tried to stop the Robot from going on his rampage all the way back in "The Reluctant Stowaway", after he too tampered with something he shouldn't have… this may be very short, but that is some nice character development, and another way in which the two Will's are the same! (And that scene was even flashed back to earlier in the featurette, so I'm sure this was intentional!) If this is the last time we see Bill Mumy play him, I'm glad we at least got that moment!
But the entire scene was truly unexpected, and has profound implications for the future of LIS… does this mean that the "Dr. Smith" we saw in episode one of the new series was in fact the original Will Robinson, in disguise, acting with the new Robot to make sure history goes the way it is meant to? He says "Oh, the pain…" just like Jonathan Harris did!
Of course, he also says "this will take a few more seasons to figure out", so is it possible that Bill Mumy from our universe, Dr. Smith from the new universe, and, of course, the Classic Will Robinson all got merged into one body? Maybe I am overthinking this, but I hope the universes can be restored eventually- although the thought of original Will in the new universe and new Will in the classic universe has great fanfiction potential!
But I hope there is an official continuation, someday- we still have the upcoming comic, which I suspect will be more of a proper crossover- fortunately, this one didn't conflict with the families meeting before, but it was still very fun, and so amazing to see! I love all the references, and set up for future adventures! LOST IN SPACE FOREVER!, And, of course… TO BE CONTINUED!
